A natural vivarium is an enclosure that simulates a particular kind of natural environment, using living plants, animals and other natural materials. It is usually situated indoors, using a glass enclosure, and is of small to medium size, although it can be created anywhere, using a variety of enclosures, and can be any size, even an entire room or detached building, like a greenhouse.

The art and technology of vivaria in the U.S. today is about at the same developmental point that marine aquaria were a few decades ago. It has been difficult for the average person to have a really beautiful, functional natural vivarium. A small number of hard-core plant and animal collectors were about the only ones who could create and maintain these environments, using various components borrowed from other industries, and with much effort.
